Culex quinquefasciatus (Culex quinquefasciatus)
Culex quinquefasciatus Culex quinquefasciatus, the Southern House Mosquito, is the vector responsible for transmission of filariasis and a number of viruses including West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis.
Assembly
The Culex quinquefasciatus Johannesburg strain genome sequence is a joint effort between the Broad Institute and the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI). Assembly of 8x shotgun coverage was performed using the Broad's whole genome assembly package ARACHNE. The assembly presented here (CpipJ1, June 2006) consists of 3,171 supercontigs, totalling 580 Mb, with a Contig N50 of 28 Kb and supercontig N50 size of 475 Kb.
Annotation
The annotation of the Culex genome is a collaboration between VectorBase, JCVI and the Broad Institute. Each group generated a set of gene predictions which were merged into a single canonical set (CpipJ1.1). The merging strategy will be described in the genome paper). A subsequent round of prediction improvement was undertaken including some manual annotation resulting in the removal of 1,500 genes for the CpipJ1.2 release, June 2008.
